LED helps the stones stand out

Solas provided a complete LED based lighting solution for the Historic Scotland exhibition of Pictish Stonework at the historic village of St. Vigeans.

The challenge given to Solas was to design appropriate lighting, using LED, to highlight the carvings on pieces of stonework carved by Picts as much as 2000 years ago.
One of the big differences between LED and equivalent Halogen spots is the amount of light spill. LEDs are very good at picking out detail without affecting the ambient light levels of the space. This reduces their usefulness in general lighting but was ideal for our purposes.
In addition lighting was required to the reception desk and to replace the boxy emergency lighting with something that fitted better with the tone of the place.
Using a combination of track fittings and gimbolled downlighters, almost 60 LED MR16 spots were used to pick out stone detailing. By hitting the stones from a very shallow angle, what in normal light was very faint markings, stood out to good effect.
12w downlighters were used to illuminate the reception desk and replace the emergency lights. ECO-LED Lighting provided me with these downlighters complete with emergency battery backup.
